WHAT:  Inspired by the work of a master, 5th grade artists learn about Picasso’s cubism period and use it as inspiration for unique self portraits

WHY:  Expanding visual arts knowledge and skills; providing exposure to important artists who have significantly influenced 20th century art; encouraging experimentation and creative expression; making personal connections to the works of others;  reinforcing the understanding that art reflects, records, and shapes history and plays a role in culture; demonstrating knowledge of elements of art: line, color, shape and form
